Though he never lived in the Whitehouse George Washington was an avid dog lover and was responsible for the introduction of the fox hound to the United States. He actually bred them.




Though there were probably working cats on the premises way before Lincoln got to the Whitehouse. Abraham Lincoln is thought to be the first president to have pet cats there. He was a real cat lover. Though no one knows what breeds he had at the Whitehouse,

There have been some 400 pets at the Whitehouse including a pet alligator. Here are some of the more exotic pets that lived at least for a short time at the Whitehouse as presidential pets.

The most popular species for pets at the Whitehouse is dogs. There have been at least 100 including the ones there now.
