Most children love the idea of having a pet, but they may lack the understanding of what it means to bring another living being home. Before you say yes to a pet, it is very important for you and your child to think about what they want that pet for, and how much time and effort it will take to take care of that animal.
If you are planning to bring an animal into your family, it is important for everyone to be on board and for Mom and Dad to realize that even with older children they will ultimately be the primary caregiver. Companion animals have a lot to teach us if we let them, and for children with other abilities animals can help teach calm, how to be a good friend, and give children the confidence to interact with others.
